History
Mu Beta Psi was founded at North Carolina State University on November 5, 1925 by Major Percy W. Price. Percy "Daddy" Price was in charge of the military band at first, and became the founder and director of the Music Program at the University. He founded Mu Beta Psi with the goal of bringing together the musicians in different ensembles and creating a family within the Music Department.
Until his death in the 1930s, Price was a leader of Mu Beta Psi, working on expanding the Fraternity into nearby colleges. He succeeded in colonizing at Davidson College and the College of William and Mary.
In the years after Price's death, Alpha Chapter continued to evolve. Helped through the difficult times of the Depression and World War II by Brothers such as Major Christian Kutschinski, Alpha Chapter managed to stay active and to help other Chapters to do the same.
Over the years, the focus of the Fraternity shifted from mostly honorary to social, taking on duties of service to music and to the North Carolina State Music Department. Today the Fraternity has active Chapters in North Carolina, Virgina, Michigan, New York, and New Jersey.
Purposes
Mu Beta Psi is founded on four purposes, which we try to include in everything we do. They are the heart and soul of our organization, providing a solid basis for us to continue to serve music and the music community. From our social gatherings to our scholarship, whatever we do has at least one of these admirable principles in mind.
The purposes of Mu Beta Psi are to honor outstanding musicians, stimulate interest in musical ensembles, advance music to its proper place as an educational subject, and to actively promote fellowship among musicians everywhere.
Service
We set up shells, risers, chairs, and stands for Music Department concerts, and have for as long as anyone can remember. The Music Department usually holds its concerts next door to Price Music Center in Stewart Theatre or the Talley Student Center Ballroom, but we have even been known to set up for concerts in locations like the Museum of Natural Sciences or Dorothea Dix Hospital. We train our Brothers in setting up shells and risers to give our Music Department's concerts a professional look.
Another of our service traditions at Alpha Chapter is to help our Marching Band at home football games. We assist the band staff in setting up water coolers, carrying equipment from the buses to the field, holding ladders during shows, and running errands for the band members and directors. We also provide apples for our band and any visiting bands.
Our efforts go to help support the Marching Band, and in doing so increase the awareness of football fans of the Music Department. Our efforts with the visiting bands are especially important in promoting fellowship among musicians from many schools. We intend to continue this tradition as long as there is a Marching Band to carry equipment and buy apples for. |
